Food Allergies

If there are dietary needs or allergies, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify a camp director and the staff. Parents will need to supply any special foods required. We will do our best to accommodate some of the most common food allergies, such as peanut, soy, and dairy, with the food that we provide.

Medication

Any medication that needs to be administered must be on file and submitted through the registration website prior to camp. All medication will be stored in the competitive sports office.

Medication must be given to the Camp Directors – children may not carry their own medicine. We prefer that your child only takes medications that are necessary while in our care. If possible, please try to schedule doses while the child is home.

Medicine must be sent in the original container with the current prescription label attached. No outdated medication will be accepted. The label must contain:

  1. the child’s name
  2. medication name
  3. the dosage
  4. method of administration
  5. time to be administered

All remaining medication will be returned to parents/guardians after camp at the request of the parent/guardian.

PLEASE NOTE: A physician’s signature is required for ALL prescribed medications.

All medication administered will be recorded in the medication log and signed by the camp director or nurse delivering it. The approved staff members for administering medication are the camp director and the on-call nurse from University Health Services.

Illness

OSU Wellness does not have the accommodations necessary to provide care for children who are ill. For everyone’s safety and well-being, we cannot allow children with contagious or infectious diseases to attend camp.

Please do not bring a sick child into the center. The parent or guardian is the best judge of their child's health, and we trust them not to bring a sick child to the center. However, if while in our care their child becomes ill, displays an unknown rash, or acts out-of-character, the child's counselor will consult the director, and the parent/guardian may be called to come to take your child home. When requested, the parent/guardian (or an alternate emergency person) is expected to come in immediately. This is to protect the health of the child and his/her classmates. Program staff is not permitted to administer medication to any child without parental consent.

Please keep your child at home if any of the following symptoms develop. The Child must be free of symptoms for 24 hours, or a physician decides child can return to camp.

  • Diarrhea
  • Severe coughing
  • Difficult or rapid breathing
  • Tears, redness of eyelids with discharge (pink eye)
  • Mouth sores
  • Fever of 100 degrees or above
  • Unusual spots or rashes
  • Sore throat/trouble swallowing
  • Infected skin patches
  • Headache and/or stiff neck
  • Vomiting
  • Severe itching of body or scalp
    • If a child is found with head lice, that child will be required to leave camp and be treated. Once proof is provided that the child no longer has lice, the child may return to camp.

Should your child become ill while in our care, we will contact you as soon as possible. Please pick up your child promptly. If we cannot reach you, we will contact the person(s) listed on your child's emergency form. In the event of a severe illness or accident, we will call EMS, and your child will be transported to the nearest hospital.

Return to Camp

  • Obtaining a written verification from a doctor and:
    • Fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol or other fever-reducing medications.
    • In the case of chickenpox, when all the lesions are scabbed over.
    • In the case of head lice, following treatment with appropriate shampoo (such as Kwell or RID) so that all nits (eggs) are gone.
    • In the case of a contagious illness, your child should take an antibiotic for 24 hours before returning.
    • In the case of persistent cough, 24 hours without the aid of cough suppressants, or allergy medication.

*If questions arise to the appropriateness of a child's return to the center, the director or assistant director has the authority to make the final decision.

If your child is diagnosed with allergies, please specify on camp registration to avoid any irritants. We will make every effort to accommodate your child.

If contacted, your camper must be picked up within one hour.

Injuries

In the event a camper is injured during their time at camp, all staff have been trained/certified in First Aid, CPR, AED, and the OSU Wellness Emergency Action Plan, with proper documentation.

  • Minor injuries: staff will provide care as needed and document the injury. A copy of the report will be provided to the parent/guardian via email.
  • Severe injuries; the camp staff will provide care as needed, and the parent/guardian will be notified.
  • Life-Threatening injury: staff will implement our Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and notify the parent/guardian.
