Group Fitness offers over 100 different classes every semester at the Colvin Recreation Center, Seretean Wellness Center, and the Student Union.
These courses offer a unique opportunity to develop new skills that challenge the mind, body and spirit. We are committed to aid participants in promoting personal wellness and developing of life-long recreational skills.

Cardio and Conditioning Classes:
Cardio Toning - The perfect conditioning class to prepare your body for any type of fitness activity. The functional movements that are used in the class are ideal for everyday activity, and help prepare the body for more intense workouts. If you are looking to strengthen your muscles, and increase endurance levels, this class is the one for you.
Core - This class will move through a series of abdominal and back exercises making sure to hit the entire core! Want a quick workout? Be sure to check out this class!
iDefense - A hands on class format that combines the tradition of self-defense movements, with cardio and strength training exercises. By incorporating both types of exercise in this class, participants develop physical skills such as power, coordination and strength. This class is a fun introduction to mixed martial arts and is sure to get your pistols firing!
Insanity - A revolutionary cardio-based total body conditioning program based on the principles of MAX Interval Training. By using MAX Interval Training, INSANITY pushes the participant to new training heights, resulting in more calories burned, faster results, and a more efficient metabolism. INSANITY’s interval training is the pinnacle of cardio training.
Intervals -If you are looking to perform at your ultimate fitness level, interval class is for you. Thats right, maximum exertion, for maximum results. This class makes fitness fun, and introduces exercises that will help you burn fat and calories. With each class, participants will develop lean muscles, strong lungs, and a strong heart to help reach fitness levels of an athlete.
Kickboxing - Kick and punch your stress away with this high-energy workout that uses martial arts basics and bags to really work up a sweat. No experience required, just come several minutes early to wrap your hands.
Orange Power Fit -This class is sure to get your heart rate up with interval based training. Exercises encourage participants to work at high intensities with short segments of rest helping to create a more efficient cardiovascular system for all participants. This workout is challenging, but also rewarding as it is developed for participants of all levels. This class will be sure to prepare your for your peak level of fitness training.
Racquetball - Participants will have the opportunity to practice and play against the best of the best players! Come with a fun and competitive attitude for a fun filled workout !
Spin - A great low-impact workout! Your instructor will guide you over a variety of terrain with several modes of training styles. Every ride is your own, so you have the ability to adjust your intensity making this class great for all levels! Space is limited, so please pick up your spin number starting 30 min. prior to class from the customer service desk to reserve your space!
TRX – Work against gravity and your body’s own resistance! As you perform hundreds of exercises that build strength, balance, flexibility, power, mobility, and prevent injuries all at the intensity you choose.
POUND(r) - This class is the first cardio jam sessions inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums. Using Ripstix(r), lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND(r) transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out.
Bachata - This class will teach you the beginning moves to the Bachata dance! Partner is not needed; the class will mingle with one another!
Ballroom Dance I (Overview-Fall, Spring & Summer Semesters) – This class is for beginner level dancers and will cover the basics of the most common ballroom dances: fox trot, waltz, tango, single time swing, triple time swing, cha cha, and rumba. No partner necessary, couples welcome.
Ballroom Dance II (Smooth Overview-Fall Semester) – This class is for students who want to learn the basics for some of the hybrid ballroom dances: nite club two step, west coast swing, quick step, as well as work on a few more advanced patterns for the smooth dances. No partner necessary, couples welcome.
Ballroom Dance II (Rhythm Dances-Spring Semester) – This class if for students who want to learn the basics for some of the hybrid ballroom dances: nite club two step, west coast swing, samba, merengue, as well as work on a few more advanced patterns for the rhythm dances. No partner necessary, couples welcome.
Country Western Dance I - The focus in this class is on four styles of two stepping both past and present. Gain insight into the history of many different styles of Two Stepping. Learn a variety of easy and effective basic principles of Leading and following. Acquire the knowledge of key terminology, techniques of fundamentals, and dance etiquette. Develop the skills of combining the rhythm with the footwork and executing single turns and multiple turn combinations. Exercise while having fun and making new friends.
Country Western Dance II - Pick up from where we left off from any of Sarah Gladden’s prior dance classes. A review of all the dances and techniques. Improve and discover more professional skills by experimenting, creating and applying movement analysis. Advance with combinations of turns and tap into creative developments through rigorous practice. Expand on Two Stepping styles and bring out new ideas. Experience a new healthy life style through the sport of partner dancing. Must have taken Country Western I or Sarah Gladden's academic dance class to partiicpate.
Dance Party - Listen to the Top Hits and learn choreography that will get your heart rate jumping and your body moving. This class targets giving you a total body workout while dancing to the beats of the music! Come join the Party
Hip-Hop - With new choreography every week, the Colvin's Hip Hop Class will enrich you with technique, movement, confidence, and lots of fun. The instructor, Gil Marom, makes sure to pick choreography that will suit and benefit dancers of all levels, and works with his student to make sure they get better and better each week. Join this fun class today!
Salsa - This class will teach you the beginning moves to Salsa dance! Partner is not needed; the class will mingle with one another!
Zumba® - A total body workout with cardio conditioning in a Latin flavor. Fusing hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that will blow you away.
Zumba Step - Step right up. We combine the awesome toning and strengthening power of Step aerobics, with the fun fitness-party that only Zumba(r) brings to the dance-floor. Zumba(r) Step increase cardio and calorie burning, while adding moves that define and sculpt your core and legs
Zumba Toning® - Blend body-sculpting techniques and specific Zumba moves into one calorie-burning, strength-training class. You'll learn how to use weighted, maraca-like Zumba Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm, build strength and tone all the target zones.
Pilates Reformer - This class offers various spring strengths that provide resistance and support while the user pushers on the footbar, pulls on ropes or straps, and sits or stands on the carriage. Exercises vary from simple isolated movements of the legs and arms to more complex exercises involving the whole body.
Restorative Yoga - Gentle yoga class for all body types and all levels of ability; no prior yoga experience required. Approximately 30-40 minutes of gentle yoga poses, followed by a 15 minute guided relaxation.
Yoga - This class works to develop the physical body with strength, stamina and flexibility; the emotional body with stability, confidence and discernment; the mental body with awareness, concentration and focus. The result is physical, emotional, and mental tranquility, enabling one to completely relax while feeling strong, confident and aware.
Barre - This class will combine postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like yoga and Pilates. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric strength training, combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. This class will also incorporate light handheld weights to bring the burn during all those reps, as well as mats for targeted core work.
Core & More – This comprehensive core class will target every aspect of your core, along with involving other muscle groups throughout the class!
Gridiron Fitness - Check out this class that will bring you back to fun and sports-minded movements. You can expect to see agility ladders, sled pulls/drags, med balls, cones, and a team atmosphere!
Strength and Stretch - A great way to complement yoga and/or cardio exercise. Strengthening exercises emphasize the abs, torso and “core” muscles to condition you for the challenges of daily living. Also includes flexibility and relaxation.
Total Body – A strength training class targeting major muscle groups using various equipment and body weight, total body incorporates bursts of cardio into movements intended to help you tone all major muscles!
Aikido - Incorporating movements of the Japanese sword, staff, spear and empty handed Jiu-Jitsu. Aikido is unique in its gentle nature and lack of competitive atmosphere. Aikido em-ploys sensitivity, balance and timing, with all techniques performed with minimum force while maintaining maximum efficiency.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing ground fighting techniques. BJJ permits a wide variety of techniques to take the fight to the ground. Once the opponent is on the ground, a number of techniques and counters are available to control the opponent.
Judo - Uses a series of throws, as well as grappling techniques, to win a judo match, where other martial arts use kicking and punching. Judo training includes self-defense, cardiovascular training, strength conditioning, improving balance and self-confidence.
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) - This class will provide you with the essential techniques of both striking and grappling; as well as how to incorporate full contact combative methods in a safe and efficient way throughout your practice.
Tae Kwon Do - This class infuses the practicality of Karate style sparring. There is equal emphasis on punching as well as kicking, and the valid striking targets are more realistic and closer to what one may encounter in a self-defense type situation. The instruction is not limited to Tae Kwon Do alone. Also incorporated into the class structure are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Okinawan Weapons, Shotokan and Goju-Ryu Karate, Muay Tai, Aikido, and various self-defense methods.
Aqua Zumba® - Love to Zumba®? Come join us in the pool for a total body workout with cardio conditioning in a Latin flavor. Fusing hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that will blow you away!
SwimFit - This class incorporates lap swimming and supplementary movements to provide resistance on the body and improve cardiovascular endurance.
Water Aerobics – This aerobics class incorporates a variety of exercises ranging from running to Jumping jacks in the deep water. Belts are provided for floatation. Toning and calisthenics both with and without water weight are conducted to increase muscle tone and strength.
Cowboy Bootcamp (paid class) - Designed to push the limits of metabolic conditioning. The workouts consist of high intensity bodyweight, strength and plyometric exercise with short cardiovascular intervals. This class is open to generally healthy people of all levels of fitness. The format allows each individual to workout at their own pace, and participants are encouraged to increase intensity as the workouts progress.
Kettlebell Training (paid class) - Combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training all into one hour! Kettlebell training primarily facilitates ballistic and swinging movements that exercise the entire body!
Olympic Lifting (paid class) - Learn the technique to the clean, jerk and snatch. Along, with learning these three lifts, instructors will focus on supplementary movements to increase strength and form. This class is designed for beginners and experienced lifters. If you’re looking for a disciplined, committed and strength in the weight room this class is for you.
Tai-Chi Chuan Fundamentals (paid class) - Introduces students to the fundamental principles of Tai Chi, including relaxed and mindful movement, proper structural alignment, and breath awareness. Students learn a foundational set of qigong (chi kung) exercises as well as the core movements from the Tai Chi short form. Tai Chi walking is also introduced.
All group exercise, martial arts classes, and dance classes are offered free of charge to Department of Wellness members, your OSU ID is all that is needed to participate. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before class as classes may fill up. Participants arriving late may not be admitted into class if capacity has been met. Please be sure to sign the fitness waiver at the front desk before coming to your first class. The fitness waiver only has to be signed once.
Towel and water required for all cycle classes as the room temperature will be elevated.
Classes may be canceled during the semester due to low attendance.
