Device Loan Program Benefits OSU Staff & Their Wellness
ABLE Tech And Their Impact
Oklahoma ABLE Tech, a sponsored program of the Wellness Center, operates an assistive technology (AT) Device Demonstration and Short-Term Loan Program to acquaint Oklahomans with an AT device before they buy. This program is available to all Oklahoma residents with disabilities, their family members, and the professionals that support them.
Two members of the OSU staff, Terry Blair and Debbie Lane, have recently taken advantage of ABLE Tech’s services to “try out” a height-adjustable standing desk called a VARIDESK.
Terry Blair, Degree Audit Specialist in the College of Human Sciences, heard about the VARIDESK while attending the arthritis class that ABLE Tech offered this past spring. She researched it on her own and asked for one through her department. She “loves” it and finds that she stands much more than she sits while at work. Terry needs three monitors to do degree audits and maintain files on HES graduates, so she has the Cube Corner 48” model. This large model fits into an office corner and gives plenty of space for two full-sized monitors. Terry’s third monitor is on its own stand beside the VARIDESK.
Terry commented, “The VARIDESK helps to relieve back pain by ‘making’ me stand straight. Also, since I do so much repetitive data inputting, it helps me to breathe better and I don’t experience that afternoon ‘slump.’ ”
Since Terry was so happy with her desk, now, seven of eleven employees in HES’ Academic Programs and Services department have VARIDESKs.
Debbie Lane, Executive Assistant to President Burns Hargis, has had her VARIDESK less than a month. She took advantage of ABLE Tech’s device loan program to try one out and only needed two weeks of the 6-week loan to decide she wanted one. Debbie requested the Pro Plus Series, which is the type ABLE Tech offers for a loan.
Debbie didn’t have any specific reason for wanting to have a standing desk other than her desire to improve her overall health and wellness. She said, “This year, I decided to eat better, exercise, and work on my well-being. I realized that sitting all day was making me stiff and sapping my energy. I heard about a standing desk and then realized I could borrow one from ABLE Tech on a trial basis! I love it and would encourage others to give it a try.”
While the criterion of the device loan program says it is “available to all Oklahomans with disabilities,” to qualify, you only need someone to attest to your need; that person doesn’t need to be a physician.
For more information on ABLE Tech’s Device Demonstration and Short-Term Loan Program, go to http://oec.okstate.edu/loan/. There, you can “search ABLE Tech’s inventory” for a “varidesk” OR research over 1,500 other assistive devices. On that same page, you can submit your request for a loan either online or download a PDF to submit by email or mail.
VARIDESK (varidesk.com) offers five models of two-tiered standing desks that allow a person to transition from sitting to standing with ease. Each desk provides spring-assisted raising and lowering of a display surface for monitor(s), speakers, documents, etc. The lower surface is spacious enough to accommodate a full-sized keyboard and mouse. The keyboard deck is fixed, while the display surface raises and lowers for maximum convenience and ergonomic comfort.
