What is a wellness coach?
A wellness coach is a guide who helps clients create lifestyle change goals related to their overall vision of wellbeing. The coach helps the client in gaining the knowledge, skills, tools, and self-efficacy necessary to achieve their goals. The coach can also serve as an accountability partner and ally that will walk with their client through their journey toward optimal wellbeing.
What is wellness coaching?
Wellness coaching is an evidence-based practice that supports a client’s autonomy and self-determination to work toward achieving behavior change. The coaching process provides a framework for clients to create small, short-term goals that will lead to a larger picture of overall wellbeing. Wellness coaching aims at improving client outcomes associated with the eight dimensions of wellbeing, including: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual.
What type of goals can I work on with my wellness coach?
Clients can choose to work on a large variety of goals including but not limited to:
- Stress management
- Time management
- Weight management
- Sleep hygiene
- Chronic disease management
Why choose wellness coaching?
In wellness coaching, we understand that behavior change is difficult and that there is no “cookie cutter” approach to reaching your goals. Throughout the process with your coach, you will find strategies and sustainable options to help you overcome barriers in reaching your overall vision of wellbeing. Wellness coaching is a journey of discovery in which you will find what works best for you.
What will be expected of me if I choose to participate in wellness coaching?
Clients will be expected to show up to their scheduled appointments on time. We ask that you do not cancel appointments within less than a 24 hour time period. We ask that clients prepare to commit to at least 6 coaching sessions for the duration of the semester. However, the client can choose to end the coaching relationship at any time if they feel it necessary.
How is wellness coaching different from counseling?
Coaches view their clients as whole and already equipped with everything they need to reach their goals.
Therapists are often helping their clients heal from trauma or negative experiences.
Coaching supports a client in making specific changes and helps them to create short term goals as they go.
Counseling helps clients to gain a deeper understanding of conscious and unconscious reasons for behaviors, but change is not necessarily the goal.
Coaching is viewed as a short term service in which clients only work with a coach until their desired goals are met.
Counseling is often a long term relationship that could last an indefinite amount of time.
Coaches do not diagnose. A coach helps their client identify current behavior and thought patterns and asks questions to help their client change those patterns.
Therapists are often looking for a diagnosis that helps to explain why their client behaves a certain way.
